Busy week at work. Was able to hit SkiBowl Tuesday night, it was snowing lightly and dry. Was feeling pretty good on the jumps, though my legs were tired from the trampoline workout the day before.

Friday I took the day off of work, and went to Timberline with Erin. I took some of the bigger jumps and even landed one!

I ran once yesterday and twice today. It has been stormy, but I managed to not get too wet. The wind kept things interesting.

It looks like I am headed the wrong way weight wise, and for the first time appear to be behind schedule for my pound-a-week, however a couple disclaimers; I usually weight myself on an empty stomach and today I ate a huge breakfast. I also was feeling exceptionally week after the 10K yesterday and carbbed up and have been drinking copious amounts of water. I was at 255 yesterday, and feel confident that I will be at or below that weight when I weigh myself tomorrow morning.

We had a traumatic pet injury on Friday. Molly was chasing Zachary upstairs and he slammed his door which caught Ashley's tail and "de-gloved" it. It was a bloody mess and Molly was yelling that it had been cut off. Zach picked up the part that had been removed and came downstairs with it. We took Ashley in to the vet, where they gave here some pain meds and amputated her tail. It sounds like the procedure went well, but they kept her over the weekend to manage her pain and change the bandages. We should pick her up tomorrow.

It looks like it is going to snow up at Timberline for the next week and a half, so there should still be plenty of snow when we are up there for spring break.

I worked with the boys in the pool a couple mornings this week. They are better than I thought they would be. Feeling more confident about their Lifeguarding class.

This is the first week that my weight has gone up. I am not terribly surprised though as my activity was minimal and I was not watching what I was eating with any kind of diligence. I guess it was kind of a cheat week.

I am feeling more confident on my snowboard. I taped up the edges of the Rossignol and took it onto the trampoline on Saturday after we got back from the mountain. That is a good little workout!

It was raining on the mountain Friday and Saturday, so didn't spend as much time as I would have liked. Friday was Erin and I. We started at ski bowl but ended up at Timberline, which was basically empty. Saturday I took the kids up while Erin was at work. Timberline was absolutely packed. I got in two runs with Molly before calling it a day.

Signed Ryan and Nathan up for Lifeguarding class over spring break. They need to work on their skills so I got a 3 month family pass to the pool. Will start mixing in some swim workouts.

Nathan got his Drivers License this week! His first unaccompanied drive was taking him and Ryan to the dance in West Salem last night.

Tough week for working out. Between not feeling particularly great and work, I wasn't able to get runs in like I had hoped, so had to do some longer runs to make up for it. Saturday was 4 miles and today I did 10K. It was cold and rainy, so I layered up and wore a raincoat, but I forgot to tape up my nipples. BLOOD.

Between walking around at a team offsite Friday, Snowboarding at Hoodoo Saturday, and these longer runs. I have spent some quality time out in the elements working up a SWEAT.

This morning I read my cousin's Facebook post:
"My grand baby had a MRI today and the results are not too positive. It was heart breaking to hear the words 'he has lesions on both sides of his brain and there will be long term damage'. But then the most incredible thing happened, my amazing daughter looked at me and said, 'mom it will be OK I was suppose to do this. ' I am a very proud mama right now. Thanks to all of you again for your prayers and support."

Spent the last week in Tahoe! We went skiing Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I had a sinus infection and felt like crap, so I didn't run Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Regardless, Thursday ended up being a great workout day for the legs as I was focusing on jumps and riding switch. My legs were shot.

We drove from Tahoe to Medford on Saturday. Nathan and Ryan went to a dance with Dallin Stimpson. I went to dinner with Mike and Tab at the Texas Roadhouse. It was delicious. We drove from Medford home today, and got the van cleaned out.

Today I ran the first mile in 9'44", then walked the rest. I had done a sinus rinse before, but was still having a hard time breathing.

I was very happy to see that my weight had not gone up while on vacation. I am still slightly ahead of schedule for my pound a week goal, but am behind on my mileage for the month. I will need to do some make-up mileage once I am feeling better.

Set a new mile PR of 8'56" on Tuesday, and then switched focus the rest of the week to concentrate on foot strikes, keeping it mid foot or forefoot. Sunday was walking on a treadmill here in Tahoe. Started out a a jog, but was feeling really light headed as it is over 7,000 feet in elevation.

Erin celebrated her 40th birthday during our drive to Tahoe.

Interesting week. I set a new PR for 1 mile at 9'41" on Thursday. I have tried to maintain the 2 miles a day, but alternate between keeping a steady pace the whole time, and trying for PR in the first mile and cruising the second. Monday I needed a recovery day. Friday night I had a hard time sleeping because my knees were sore. My plan Saturday was to try for 10K distance at a nice leisurely pace, but at about 1.5 miles I was feeling very light headed and weak. Decided to hit the 5K turnaround and walked a bit to try and recover. Picked it up again and felt like I might collapse, so I stopped the run and walked the 1.5 miles home (not included in my stats) After I got home I could not get warm and had some intestinal issues. So I am thinking the achy knees and weakness were more signs of a mild illness/bug than from just exertion. Taking a rest day today just to be sure.

Overall I am rather pleased with my progress thus far. Since switching to the SuperFeet I have not seen any negative effects. In fact my feet and legs feel great both during and after the runs. I will probably try switching to a higher arch when we get back from Tahoe the week of 2/15.

I actually saw 258 on the scale Saturday morning, but had some pizza for lunch and went out to dinner Saturday night.

Overall a good week. Didn't realize that every run except the first was in the 11' range. definitely feeling good about that.

Took the Camry in to get the tires rotated and balanced and found out the front two were worn to blow out levels due to alignment, so I got two new tires and will have the alignment fixed Monday.

Celebrated 6 years at Nike on 1/19. It is hard to believe that I have been away from OHSU that long.

I had braces put on Tuesday. They are no funner now than they were when I was a teenager. True to form, I had a bracket pop off one of my teeth within 36 hours.

With the addition of braces, I have switched up my diet a bit. Generally, two meals get replaced by protein shakes. The third meal usually consists of small, soft items that I can place directly by my back teeth.

Thursday I played basketball. I played once last year. My jogging everyday did not prepare me for the short bursts needed for basketball. I was consistently winded and walked a lot. There were only 5 of us who showed up, so we all had to play the whole time. We got crushed.

Went to Rory's baptism yesterday which was nice. Had a banana split afterwards. It was delicious.

Cold Week. Everyone worked from home on Monday as the roads were snowy/icy. My tailbone is still really sore, but mostly bothers me just when I am sitting. We picked up the Toyota Camry from Uncle Stan last night. Today we added wiper fluid, antifreeze, replaced the battery connections, cleaned the Windows inside and out and RainX'ed them. It has a cassette player, so we had to find some of our old tapes to try it out.

I have been happy with my runs. I was wiped out Friday, so skipped it. I am also happy with the lost weight, especially since I haven't really changed my eating habits. I am getting braces on Tuesday, so I figure I will start changing eating habits then, as I am going to have to anyway.

01/03/2016 - Catching Up

1/1 Friday 2.01 miles 14'19"

1/3 Sunday 2.01 miles 13'53"
Weight 268.2

It has been a while. D convinced met to run a Half Marathon in October, which he was running with his wife. So May 18th I started running again. I started low and slow and ran 3 5K races in June before heading to Tahoe for Ty and Angelina's wedding and our family reunion. Attempted to do "the loop" a couple times with Shaylee and Cami, but 7,000 feet was just too much and I ended up walking a lot of it. I completed a 10K in July and was training for a Half Marathon in September, thinking if I could just complete the September race, I could work on speed for the October Half.

In August my neck seized up on me, so much so that I had to go to the chiro. I was out of commission for weeks, and when the race came around I was woefully unprepared. I had gotten up to 9.00 miles before the injury, but only had 2 5K runs in the month before the race. I hit the wall at Mile 7. The 70 year-old walkers passed me at mile 9.5 and I was dead last. I don't even show up in the records as having finished.

I was able to get in lots more training runs over the next month, but nothing more than 8.25 miles. On October 17th I ran the Newport Bay-to-Brews half marathon. It had a hill. Since it was a loop we had to do the hill twice. The second time killed my knees. I started walking about mile 11.25, and Darrell met me at mile 12.0 and walked with me til the end. I was able to painfully jog the final quarter or eighth of a mile.

During all of this I had been doing the run-walk-run method, running 4 minutes, then walking 45 seconds. I did a 5K running the whole way one week after the race.

Since then I was sick, and busy. We went to Utah for Thanksgiving which was nice. I took the kids skiing 2 days while we were out there. I skied one of the days. That uses very different muscles than running.

I took two weeks off for Christmas and we spent a lot of time up on the mountain. I was snowboarding, and hurt my tailbone by butt flopping the landing on one of my jumps.

So with all of that, I have just started running again. My hope is to do at least 600 miles this year, which is 2.00 miles a day for 300 of the 365 days. If all goes well, I also hope to FINALLY do the Newport Marathon this year in June.

Cheers for now!
-Allen
